IRS computer problems shut down tax return e-File system
The IRS stopped accepting electronically filed tax returns Wednesday because of problems with some of its computer systems. The outage could affect refunds, but the agency said it doesn't anticipate "major disruptions."
ELECTRONIC FILING CUT-OVER SCHEDULE FOR 2015
Please note: The last day to authorize business returns for electronic filing for years 2012 - 2014 will be Wednesday, December 23. This should allow time to receive an acknowledgement before the IRS cut-over on December 25. Returns that are rejected will need to either file on paper or wait until e-File resumes in 2016.
PTIN Requirements for Tax Return Preparers
Preparer tax identification number (PTIN) applications and renewals for 2016 are now being processed.
Anyone who preparers or assists in preparing federal tax returns for compensation must have a valid 2016 PTIN before preparing returns. All enrolled agents must also have a PTIN.
